Christian Albert Schmidt, Hamburg > NYC, July 20, 1865

J. (unknown first name - probably Johann) Schmidt (a farmer) age 59 and his wife Friderike age 58 emigrated on the Eugenie, arriving in New York on July 20, 1865 with their adult son, Christian Albert Schmidt age 27 (also a farmer) and his wife Wilhemina (Minnie) Manzelmann age 27 (spelling may be slightly different). During that emigration, one child, Johann (a.k.a. William or Wilhelm Johann) Schmidt age 1, born in about 1863 traveled with them. This was the first sailing year for Eugenie after her construction for Robert M. Sloman Company in Hamburg. The family reportedly originally came from the area of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.

During the voyage, Minnie gave birth to an infant girl, who was listed as "Friderike" when the ship landed on July 20, 1865. However, her birth was subsequently registered in New York with the name she used throughout her life - Maria Johanna Schmidt.

After their arrival in New York, the family eventually moved to Auglaize County, Ohio where they are found on the 1870 census without Christian's parents. Three more sons were born in Auglaize County (Johann Heinrich August Schmidt in 1867, Carl David Heinrich Schmidt in 1869 and Joseph Albert Schmidt in 1872). Minnie died sometime before January of 1877, when Christian remarried. He remained a farmer in Auglaize County until his death in 1892.
