The oldest shipping company in Germany is the company of "Rob. M. Sloman & Co.". It was founded in 1793. Their headquarters were located in Slomanhaus, Hamburg, Germany.
In German, "Das massige Slomanhaus steht an der Ecke Baumwall und Steinhoft. Der Englische Kapitan William Sloman grundete gemeinsam mit seinen SohnenWilliam Palgrave und Robert Miles Sloman die Reederei Robert M. Sloman. Am 29. Mai 1850 lief unter der Sloman-flagge der erste Dampfer, die Helena Sloman, von Hamburg nach Ubersse aus. Wenige Jahre spater zahlten 21 Schiffe zum Unternehmen. "Die Slomans hatte ihre Reederei an die Spitze der Hansestadt gefuhrt. In Jahre 1908 gab die Reederei den Bau dieses Verwaltungebaudes am Baumwall in Auftrag, das sich heute noch im Familienbesitz befindet."
Translation: "The massive Sloman House stands at the corner of Baumwall and Steinhoft. The English Captain William Sloman jointly established the shipping company Robert M. Sloman & Co., with his sons William Palgrave and Robert Miles Sloman. On 29 May 1850 the first steamer under the Sloman flag, the Helena Sloman, sailed overseas from Hamburg. A few years later the firm counted 21 ships.
"The Slomans had located their shipping company at the tip of the Hanseatic town. In the year 1908, the shipping company gave the building of it's administration offices on Baumwall to the family in order that it remain in the family's possession, and it remains yet today."
( In 1997, Kuhne and Nagel Group, and Rob M. Sloman and Co. withdrew from cargo handling at the Port of Hamburg, Germany. Their shares of Sloman, Schoer and Co. were bought by Steinweg-Handelsveem.) |
