.Ship Eugenie Temporary Proof of Nationality, Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum, Oslo, Norway (Paraphrased translation from the Norwegian) No. 15 [national crest of the united Signal letters "By permission from the Royal Norwegian Government's Department for Local Affairs which has agreed that a Aktieselskabet "Eugenie" of Sandefjord (whose manager is Hr. H.C.A, Michelsen and which owns the ironship "Eugenie" that was built in Hamburg in 1865 with tonnage of 696.86 reg. tons) may fly the Norwegian flag for a time not to exceed two (2) years or until it has been naturalized in a Norwegian port. The Department hereby issues the present PROOF OF NATIONALITY for the Norwegian barque Eugenie (whose Captain is Sophus Aaroe, a captain citizen of Tonsberg) and it will apply to it's forthcoming voyage from Cardiff to Trois Pistoles (and further, depending on circumstances) until the 5th of April, nineteen hundred and one (1901). It is licensed to fly the Norwegian flag during the mentioned time and enjoy the protection and all the rights that belong to Norwegian vessels"
Synopsis: The above 1899 document appears to bestow on the Eugenie Company, it's manager Michelsen and Captain Aaroe a temporary proof of nationality and allowed to fly the Norwegian flag until 1901, so that the ship may be used in trade in Canadian waters and elsewhere. The captain must present the proof each time it enters a port where a United Kingdom Consul or Vice Consul exists, and must have the ship "naturalized" at any Norwegian port that has a custom warehouse. |
