SANDEFJORD DOCUMENTS, Page 1

Three documents were located in the maritime museum in Sandefjord, Norway.  The first is a 1904 table from Norske Veritas detailing some descriptions of Ship Eugenie.  The second is an excerpt from the 1906 Year-Book of the Norwegian Mercantile Marine, called a "Forlisrapport" -"reports on wreckage".  It gives some interesting details on the location of Eugenie's grounding in 1906 and the results of maritime investigation of the disaster.  The third and last document is a chart of "Cargo-Sailing-Vessels" of unknown origin, but mostly in English but some Norwegian.  We know that it post-dates the Eugenie grounding because it lists her as "condemned".

From NORSKE VERITAS 1904 (see page 2), the table that starts with "E Sailing vessels" – the same captain (’master’) LM. Hansen. The classification is empty for this and only this ship, and this was before she went aground. Strange. Non classified – why?

712 tons - and two additional measurements 612 tons under deck, and 656 Net tons. These are high mathematics in the art of ship measurement, which governed 1) the amount of cargo the ship could carry – you want to have that high 2) the amount of money the ship had to pay in harbors, canals, for insuring etc. – you want to keep that low….

Here we have also the registered dimensions, and the confirmation that it is in English feet. The shipbuilder is confirmed as from Hamburg.  Port of registry is "Sf" = Sandefjord.

Under ’owners’ is a remark: Skbactslsk. Other were called for example Actslsk or Rdslsk.

Skbactslsk is ’Skibsactieselskab" – a limited company, with specific ship rules "ships’ limited company". Under Norwegian law. Actslsk – common limited company, Rdslsk – Rederiselskab? …. Not a limited company, but the finer points escape me.

Note also that they did not have a ’last survey’ and that she was not insured. Mr Michelsen owner and Mr. Hansen, master, were playing for high stakes.
